Together with the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, NELP is urging the community of fair chance hiring and ban the box activists and supporters to gear up for the Day of Action on Wednesday, June 10th calling on President Obama to take action establishing the federal government and federal contractors as model employers of people with records.

Two generations of the war on drugs, zero tolerance, and aggressive policing have left 70 million adults with arrest or conviction records that undermine their ability to be considered for jobs. These criminal justice policies systemically and disproportionately impact African Americans, who are incarcerated at a rate six times that of whites.

That’s why on the National Day of Action for Federal Fair Chance Hiring on June 10th we are encouraging supporters of ban-the-box and fair chance hiring to get active online by using and sharing the following resources:

  • A sample e-mail blast you can send to your constituency and community to inspire action on June 10
  • Sample language to send to the President via the White House website
  • Shareable images to use on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms to help spread the word about ban-the-box and federal fair chance hiring

You can access all of these resources here.

As always, thank you for your continued engagement on this urgent issue. Please let us know if your organization is up for organizing your community in support of the effort, starting today and tomorrow by tweeting out the notice of the call to action (the sample tweets and infographic are below), then following up again Wednesday with the POTUS tweets and emails (included in the google docs linked above). In addition, please direct any questions about the information or resources in this e-mail to Eduardo Garcia at
